Start with the webinars on Adsense and content creation.  A lot of your general questions are answered there, then you can go into specific questions. 

Look at the backlinks. I’ve done some work on this as I do have a site that is a service franchised across the country.  My biggest issue is getting to talk to someone, anyone! Local contractors refer you to the main office, the main office wants you to talk to the local etc.  I’ll take any suggestions/partnerships I can get!

Emailing didn’t get me any interest at all.  I am dealing with small to medium sized businesses and I think that spam blindness sets in and an email gets glanced at but not really read. 

So far cold calling has been my best result. 

$300 a month avg per state is what I’m working with as well.  More for densely populated wealthy states but that’s the avg I’m aiming for. 

Is there a way to do this on a SSL site?

I did a few tests with the modifier that Andrew posted.  I tested using a google search of 10 items per page and 100 items per page with a proxy and without.  Didn’t seem to make a huge difference.  BUT Google doesn’t even agree with itself.
